Collecting Canadian Coinage
Knowledge is the key to any successful coin collection. Prior to spending any significant amount of money on buying coins, I advise any collector of Canadian coins to make three other small investments.
1. Buy the Charlton standard catalog "Canadian Coins, Volume One", which is available here. For $25, you will receive a tremendous amount of knowledge about the decimal coinages of Canada.
2. Subscribe to Canadian Coin News, available here. An annual subscription costs less than $50. This bi-weekly newspaper contains articles on all aspects of Canadian coinage, advertisements from Canada's leading coin dealers, and notices of upcoming coin shows and auctions. Best of all, each edition has "Trends", four full pages of the latest pricing data for Canadian coins. In my opinion, this is by far the best periodical on Canadian coin collecting.
3. Join the Royal Canadian Numismatic Association (RCNA). Here is the application form. An annual membership costs only $35. Membership provides access to educational seminars, correspondence courses on Canadian Numismatics, the RCNA library, and lots of other helpful information. You will also receive the monthly "Canadian Numismatic Journal", a terrific magazine full of interesting articles about Canadian numismatics.
Trust me, these three purchases will be the best $110 you ever spent on your numismatic hobby.
